Russell Wilson, the Three P’s and That Game Monday Night

I went into work on Monday night, ready to get my first good look at Russell Wilson. Part of my pre-game research ritual is hopping on Twitter, scanning for tweets from players that could be a part of my highlight. Wilson, whose Twitter handle is both punny and amazing, didn’t post anything of note to put in my highlight, but he did post his new ad for Levi’s.

First of all, I just have to say, DAYYYYUM.

Second of all, I love the ad and the way Wilson – no, Russell – tells his story. It just FEELS like we’re on a first name basis, doesn’t it? It’s like we’re new friends who’ve met a few times, we’ve gotten past the small talk, and are getting into real, deep conversations about our lives. It’s not forced, it just sort of happens. I think that speaks to the type of person he is, and credit Levi’s for letting his character shine through.

Third of all, the three P’s he learned from his dad. All of us have those lessons we carry from our parents, always. They are iron-clad truths that we swear by, and I love that Wilson carries his dad’s legacy through them.

So how do those three P’s apply to the madness that was Monday night? Continue reading

The Motto: My Words to Live By

I love words to live by. When a short set of words makes me laugh, think or smile, I immediately nerd out and get inspired and share it on Facebook and Tweet it and then WHERE THE HELL DID 45 MINUTES GO. The motto is an opportunity for a person or company to set themselves apart with a bold statement about who they and what they stand for. Some of my favorites…

The state motto of Connecticut is Qui Transtulit Sustinet,” (He Who Transplanted Still Sustains). That actually took me aback when I first read it, it suits me so well. I left New England for college and my first job, and now I’m back, transplanted, and have found myself happy as ever, with a new appreciation for all the region has to offer (not kidding: Phillips Phillips’ “Home” just started playing on Spotify as I’m typing this. I may or may not be getting a little emotional). Speaking of music… Continue reading

Going Undefeated

I am not a huge movie person. Over the years, it’s become unappealing for me to sit still for two hours, leaving my worries at the cineplex door and entering into the world the film creates. Because of this, I’ve become very picky with the movies I do see. I make plans, I get excited, I anxiously wait for the room to darken.

When Undefeated was released in theaters a few months back, I was disappointed to find out it wasn’t playing anywhere near home. When it won the Oscar for Best Documentary, my desire to see it grew. Ed Cunningham, one of the film’s producers, is also an ESPN college football analyst, so when I found out that there would be a screening at work, I was giddy.

So today, I saw Undefeated. And laughed. And cried. And left wanting to help people. Continue reading

Luck: On My Own, and Andrew

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

I love this definition of luck. It perfectly captures the sense of destiny and dedication required to see it through. I am a staunch believer in this, too:

The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I’ve always considered myself lucky, but I also believe there’s a plan already laid out for me, or as my dad called it, a skyscraper I’m consistently climbing.

At this particular moment, I feel incredibly lucky. I’m headed to New Orleans in a week for the Final Four, and my alma mater might be there too. I feel lucky, but I know I earned this opportunity; there’s a reason I worked my tail off since January. The whole season was preparation for this – trying new things, asking questions, gaining trust, challenging myself. I don’t know how the producers chose who was going to travel to the Big Easy, but I don’t think they pulled my name out of a hat (but if they did, I’m thankful anyway :) ). Continue reading

Six Reasons I’m Okay with What Happened at the Super Bowl, aka Things I Tell Myself

1. The team’s motivation is going to be at an all-time high going into next season.

After completing a 13-3 season, winning 10 straight games and coming up four points short of winning it all, New England should come back hungry in 2012. I’m not counting on the two first and two second round draft picks (they’ll probably trade up or down and end up with just two of those four picks). I’m not counting on what happens in free agency (although Deion Branch and Wes Welker coming back would be huge). The veterans of this team will want to re-establish the greatness and the aura that comes with winning three titles in four years, and going to five Super Bowls in 11. I think this game will energize them to get some swag back. Continue reading

Super Bowl 42 Relived, and Lessons Learned

It is a cold and gray day in Connecticut, but my soul is filled with warmth and excitement. My team is going to the Super Bowl, thanks to some huge defensive plays, luck, maybe even an angel.

Not only are they playing for the world championship, they have the chance to brush over memories of one of the hardest nights of my life. They’re playing the New York Giants, who ruined the Patriots’ perfect season in unforgettable fashion almost four years ago.

I watched this happen thousands of miles from home, across the Atlantic Ocean. Continue reading
